Kelowna, BC - Sopa Fine Arts is pleased to announce Bryan Ryley’s solo exhibition, ‘Upsetting the Clan’. This show opens June 7 th thru July 3 rd 2007.
Ryley's intensely colored canvases convey a vivid tension between the loose fluidity of his acrylic medium versus the rigid linear patterns that are created through the process of dragging the paint over the surface of the canvas. Time based, both in process and visual effect, the work constructs experience through images that appear fleeting, as if caught out of the corner of one’s eye.
“Upsetting the Clan is an attempt to push the language of form into its own autonomous role, devoid of external reference or representational intent. The paintings do not evolve from a preconceived image or idea that I am trying to express but rather from an activity of making a work and from the dictates of the materials used. In this I am attempting to replace referential logic with a functional one thus locating an awareness of the ‘here and now’ into the process of experiencing art.”

Ryley’s latest body of work challenges the platform through which we read and understand contemporary painting.
Opening night is June 7th from 7-9 pm. For more information please contact the gallery or online at www.sopafinearts.com
