This show opens Feb 7 th and runs thru March 4 2008.
Embedded amidst the many layers in Shawn Serfas's paintings is an interest in Environmental Sciences, the landscape and issues bordering abstraction and representation. His paintings are an ongoing investigation of the connections between self-similarity in material structures, the geomorphology of painting and the relationship of humanity’s mark upon the land. His paintings also explore ancient ideograms and iconography which evoke the ancestry and immaterial structures within environmental spaces. Through Serfas’ eyes, environmental flux is constantly fueled by the systematic dissection and rebuilding of natural environments seen in the vivid physicality of our local landscape and geology. Shawn’s distinctive mark making, visual integrity, colour sensibilities, and compositional poise are creative qualities directed by his connection to the landscape.
Serfas’ work embodies the evolution from a contemplative state towards that which shapes his process. This is essentially the creative act or creative practice.
