STRAIGHT FORWARD

This show runs May 1 – June 3 , 2008.

This show is about experiencing new things in an abstracted, but straightforward manner. The various techniques each artist uses, from thinly applied brushwork to heavy, thick lines and trickles; all timeless painting techniques with no tricks, familiar form or depiction, yet act as reminders that paintings can be created in similar fashion with varying results. It also suggests that the earth's natural phenomena, given similar disturbances and weather patterns will also yield unexpected results. In painting, choice and accident often go hand in hand.

Some works in this exhibition show more formal divisions between two or more areas of color, with cracks of light showing through, not to suggest horizontal landscape or vertical figures, which might limit fully appreciating the effect of light and movement but rather more freedom and chance with architectural areas loosely brought into play. This imposed order is observed through the dynamic of shape and color interactions, allowing a sense of discovery to take place. It's important to consider inner thoughts or emotion when viewing abstract work, often no words can articulate someone's response to nonrepresentational artwork; every suggestion or reaction is equally valid as we are all fully aware that beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.

The full list of artists in this exhibition is Bryan Ryley, Robert Kingston, Harry Gruenert, Adele Kaars Sypesteyn and Alayne Spafford.
