Deborah Bell and Victoria Johnson - SpinDrift PRESS RELEASE SOPA FINE ARTS ‘SpinDrift’ Our upcoming joint show, ‘SpinDrift’ featuring artists Deborah Bell and Victoria Johnson opens Sept 6th and runs thru October 2nd, 2007. Deborah Bell's imagery continues to reflect her interest in inter-lacings of unicellular life forms in aquatic realms, the elemental building blocks found in our observed physical world. Bell's current body of work, jumping off from the notion of 'Spindrift', conveys the zone where water, air and earth interact. The paintings are multi-layered, transparent, and atmospheric …very buoyant and musical. "I am inspired by the idea of everything in nature essentially deriving from the same stuff - energy and light - and our interconnectedness with all other life. An ongoing exploration is what I have called 'invented science'; a mix of what I understand about molecular biology, systems in nature and my play with making the invisible visible." Deborah Bell In Johnson's work, the content is the corresponding relationships that catalyze and form continuity and begin to oscillate in the painting balancing symmetry and declination. Eventually the paintings investigate forms that interweave in detectable ways, intensify dualities or loosen into polarities. To do this without getting complicated is often the challenge with painting. “A work of art has a spirit. The spirit in these paintings is immaterial images that I arrive at through sequences of inspiration, by quieting the mind, and staying with a transitory feeling and emotion. There is an emotional aspect to the paintings that engages a mood from which my most authentic works spring forth.
