We invite you to join us for the opening of, “Radial Grey” a solo exhibition with Okanagan artist, Shawn Serfas.

Environmental science and the landscape are the protagonists of Shawn Serfas’s work—the processes below the earth's surface, undetectable to the naked eye but always at work, are founding principles in Serfas's painting practice. The Radial Grey exhibition is compromised of three different series of work: Revolution Series, Field + Canal and the Aeolian Series. Radial Grey refers to the cyclical nature of painting and the sources artists bring into the studio. In this investigation, he considers our relationships with the land and how it's always changing and evolving, simultaneously considering the issues bordering abstraction and representation. Serfas uses color unlike most artists, where typically colorists attempt to create shadow and depth with variations in color; Serfas’s strategic use of color allow the viewer to see various pooling or blooming reactions in the paint, between pockets or layers of pigments. In effect, he's simulating erosion and other sedimentary layering, the way it might occur in nature, using techniques he's discovered over years of experimenting with various processes.

Shawn Serfas is an Okanagan based artist and lecturer with UBC Okanagan’s Creative Studies Faculty.  In 2000 Shawn Serfas graduated with a B.F.A and BA, majoring in Art History from the University of Saskatchewan, and was awarded the Judy Poole Fine Arts Award for the most distinguished Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate, the Lorie Lee-Knight Memorial Award, the Dr. Walter & Mrs. Ruth (Mortenson) Leverton Award as well as several other distinction awards.  In 2003 he received his MFA from the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, where he received the University of Alberta Master of Fine Arts, Master of Design Scholarship. Serfas has become a gallery favorite and among numerous collectors in Western Canada; this will be Serfas's third solo exhibition at Sopa Fine Arts.

This exhibition opens October 1st and runs through November 3rd, 2009.
