Sopa Fine Arts is pleased to present new paintings by artist Ben Van Netten in:

Land… Water… Time

Known for transforming stripe painting from a static, conventional style into a vivid, sexy and fascinating art form, Van Netten orchestrates a perfect balance between color, light and space. These seeming abstractions sing with a blur of energy that moves across the surface of the canvas. As you move closer, a mirage of land or water may appear. Van Netten paints predominantly subdued horizontal lines, which the eye quickly assimilates, processing each hue and shade at once.

Having been fascinated with expressing concepts that are not easily represented in two dimensions, Van Netten uses oil on canvas to portray time by painting the feeling of motion, using photographic images captured from his geographic environment. Digital art (or computer art) is a recent, yet relentlessly evolving form of expression used by many artists to extend the potentials of traditional painting, photography and graphic design, thus allowing these three realms to mutually influence each other. In our time, with all the possibilities offered with computer technology; artists are further developing their own unique uses having the chance to explore its advantages.

“Most of my works begin as photographs. Using experimental photographic techniques I will capture the landscape which will become the source material for the painting. Often I will represent the photograph on the canvas exactly like I see it, and other times I will borrow just the palette and general composition to use as a starting point for an abstract painting. I like to experiment with, and apply new technologies to my work. I feel this is a unique time in the history of painting and I’m very excited to be working now.”

Whatever you want to see in Van Netten's work, it will be an experience of being immersed in color, giving illusion and imagination a chance to fill in the blanks.
