'FULL CIRCLE' – PHIL DARRAH solo exhibition

Darrah prefers to work on large scale paintings where he has the luxury to let loose with bold color and allow exciting shapes to emerge in a seemingly haphazard method. His visual vocabulary—configurations that record spaces, objects & things in combination with half formed brush strokes, elude or suggest there is much more to it, however. Repetition isn't essential when combining Darrah's color-field sensibilities, with a more gestural approach in his newest work; he takes us into a less orderly, more sporadic mind set. These ambiguous, loosely composed paintings are a departure from years of controlling bands of color and shape that the artist was known for. For Darrah, it's a blast from the past, going back to his roots so to speak; the soft edges and less-contained handling in this exhibition brings the artist back full circle, reminiscent of an earlier, less structured painting practice.
Phil Darrah studied fine art at the Harrogate School of Art in Yorkshire before attending the Slade School of Fine Art in London in his youth. He immigrated to Canada from the U.K. in 1968 and retired from a long teaching career at the University of Alberta in 2003. Darrah now spends his time painting in a large studio on his farm in Mulhurst Bay, alongside his wife, renowned Canadian sculptor Isla Burns. His work has been exhibited in Canada, the U.K. and Greece. Darrah has been awarded numerous grants and commissions, as well as being collected in a large number of prominent corporate art collections.
Sopa Fine Arts is pleased to present Phil Darrah's highly anticipated second solo exhibition at Sopa, opening NOVEMBER 5 – running through to DECEMBER 1.
