Sopa Fine Arts is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by David Newkirk

SPARE PARTS

This show opens March 6 and runs thru April 1, 2008.

Mythology is the source of the theme for David Newkirk’s most recent body of work. He has envisioned the Greek mythical character Daedalus, the craftsman and inventor who was consigned to build a labyrinth on the island of Crete to house the Minotaur Absent-mindedly stumbling across random debris, Daedalus can be imagined finding inspiration in such humble commodities.

Newkirk has set out to address the significance of touch, the evidence of process, two- versus three-dimensionality, and gesture in Spare Parts. With a robust Pop sensibility, Newkirk’s choices of colour, shape, and the overall movement in his paintings suggest a fusion of various twentieth-century influences. The artist’s process has evolved into an exercise in spontaneity and intuition. This process in its own right directs or shows the way to the conclusion of each painting; the canvas size serves as a boundary, defining the artist’s physical connection to the curves, sweeping brush strokes, shapes, and contours. “In sketching these gestural marks, I aim for a loose and unencumbered sense of physical freedom.”

Bold shapes and colours infuse Newkirk’s dynamic paintings with a compelling energy. In the transition between the geometric and gestural systems, flatness and depth, we realize that both accident and control coexist in Newkirk’s paintings, reminding us that when we look at art, we can expect the unexpected.

Opening night is March 6th from 7-9 pm. The artist will be in attendance. For more information please contact the gallery or online at www.sopafinearts.com
