VERGE - Jordi Alfaro
May 3 - June 5
This month, Sopa Fine Arts is pleased to exhibit our largest body of work to date from Spanish sculptor, Jordi Alfaro. Using his labour intensive, hand coiled technique, and a variety of custom glazes, Alfaro’s ceramic work continues to express an ongoing passion for beautiful form.
Growing up in Barcelona, Alfaro was surrounded by a landscape that included the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean, and the architecture of Gaudi. His father, an inventor of machines, indirectly introduced the young artist to ceramics through his business with various brick factories in Europe and South America where he became enamoured with the responsive quality of clay. Alfaro instantly felt a sense of connectedness to the medium; transforming this response into shape, often reflecting an organic sensual tranquility found in nature. Alfaro's work also references adobe architecture, the human figure, and weathered stone. Larger pieces subtly reflect the artist's own body proportions with evidence of a meticulous, hands-on process in every sculpture.
Jordi Alfaro has lived and worked in North America since 2001. In addition to his studio work, his art practice includes collaboration in public artworks and various international projects.
VERGE will run the entire month of May. Please join us on opening night.
Thursday May 3rd from 7-9pm.
