TURNING POINTS - Alayne Spafford
solo exhibition - OCT 6 - NOV 1
Sopa Fine Arts is please to showcase a solo exhibition for Alayne Spafford this month.
A preoccupation with dichotomy is central to Spafford's artwork. Order is undermined by disorder, bright jewel-box hues contrast with pale, understated colour, and text, though often a focal point, is oblique and meaning hangs as it should, satisfyingly beyond reach. The compartmentalized collections of motifs, text and number sequences read like graffiti, a language of unapologetic brush strokes, scribbles and color. Each element, while on its own arbitrary, ultimately becomes essential to the completed piece.
An ongoing affinity for bold color, the artist uses her masterful brush work and drawing to offset the chaos. Or she'll sometimes add bits of paper collage and fabric to really stir things up — but never really loses control. After years of honing her practice, Turning Points shows us that Spafford has turned a new corner with her work. Integrating the scribbles and loops that have defined it so well, with a stimulating fresh refinement. The results are dynamic and beautiful — art pieces that seem to find places in our hearts and our homes.
