Criss-cross – Scott Plear, Aleksandra Rdest & Alan Boileau
May 5 - May 31
True to its name, the criss-cross is one of the most widely used markings in geometry, particularly in contemporary artwork. It allows artists to play with intersecting color, contrasting planes that create intriguing soft layers or hard edges, or variations of both. Many paintings find depth and transition more fluid, when using linear passages. Boileau often balances his anchoring bands or blocks with texture and relief that are classic examples of using criss-crosses for effect.
Rdest continues working richly layered, sublimely colored, and spatially charged paintings, which mimic organic patterns and growth; with an almost microscopic depiction. Intrigued with global change and human intervention, Rdest explores forces that are interchangeable, undulating and always evolving.
In this show, Plear continues with his 'core' series; a body of work that concentrates on juxtaposing lines and fields of color, with heavily packed and thickened paint, in luscious creamy layers. Over time, it seems that Plear has pared down his process to an almost perfect intuition, until success seems the only possibility.
This show at Sopa Fine Arts will run the month of May, with the opening night
First Thursday, May 5th from 7-9pm.
