SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER

What a beautiful fall we are having! The weather has been cooler these past few days but overall, it has been lovely to sit on a porch swing with a glass of wine… Okay, I still like to do this in any weather, but it's been especially nice this past week. Maybe it's because the kids are back in school and everything is right with the world again?

Deborah Bell with 'floating and signaling'

Terry and Shawna at SpinDrift Opening Night
Sopa has planned some exciting new fall shows, so keep checking your email to see which artists will be featured. We will also be hosting several events in the gallery this month.

Rose Braun's Untitled 43 x 43, oil on metal
The title for this next show ‘Continual EMBODIMENT’ shows us how artists are routinely giving concrete form to abstract ideas. Both Gruenert and Braun accelerate the process of aging in their work to create an illusive sense of time; while imbuing sentiment and longing. This show runs for the entire month of October.

Harry Gruenert’s oil on panel
Ben Van Netten's newest show, "The New Dynamism" shows at the Herringer Kiss Gallery in Calgary. This show features all new works and runs from: October 13 - November 10. We are looking forward to seeing new work this fall from Ben as well. |

Deborah Bell and Josh share ideas
'SPINDRIFT' OPENING

If you haven't had a chance to stop by and see our current show, 'SpinDrift', you might want to find a quiet moment when you feel like unwinding, to enjoy the work by these two wonderful artists. Victoria Johnson and Deborah Bell have a strong new collection of work that gives you a feeling of calm and clarity; perfect for our hectic lives. Now if we can only convince Kate Stewart to start a yoga class one morning a week in the gallery (for our fellow art appreciators), so we can truly enjoy the artwork while we work through our poses…

COMING UP NEXT MONTH

We're happy to announce a joint show for October with local artist, Rose Braun and San Francisco artist, Harry Gruenert. Motivated by a desire to convey what things actually are over what they may look like they are, Rose's work embodies ideas about images of places and people that are felt rather than seen. Often hinting of nostalgia, the work shows varying surface textures and distressed metal finishes that have become so prevalent in her new work.
A reminder for some of you about a Book Launch at Sopa, Sept 20th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, for Patricia Ainslie’s new book titled 'Alberta Art and Artists’. If you are interested, please stop by Sopa for a visit.

Opening night for
‘Continual EMBODIMENT’ is Thursday, October 4th from 7-9 pm.

‘One day it will have to be officially admitted that what we have christened reality
is an even greater illusion than
the world of dreams.’
