Opening Night for 'Light + Latitude' exhibition

‘Light + Latitude’ Opening…

Whew, it’s going to be a hot month! Jennifer Seymour and Tom DeGroot have a strong body of work currently showing at Sopa, ending July 31. We were happy to introduce them to several collectors, old and new at our last opening. Fortunately we kept cool inside, enjoying a few favorite Okanagan wines. The work in this show is going quickly so be sure to stop in or email to see which pieces are still available.

IN THE STUDIO

Alex Couwenberg's newest show, Cosmetically, Aesthetically, Unregrettably opens July 21st until Aug. 21st. Also this month, New York artist, Melissa Stern is having a joint showing of her work at Studio Swan in Palmetto, GA. Jim Stoccardo's solo show in Capitol Hill opens July 6th.

Below, Tom DeGroot's newest resin on cardboard series shines under the lights in the gallery. The glossy finish on his richly colored pieces is often referred to as 'eye candy' for their slick aesthetic appeal. The minimalist style of DeGroot’s work allows for it to hang compatibly with other artwork, rather than distracting or taking away from the other pieces; the unique surface also adds texture as well as showing a dripped, sculptural edge from the sides. Doesn't every good art collection need a Tom DeGroot?

COMING UP NEXT MONTH

August features the artwork of Ottawa artist, Christopher Griffin. Griffin's newest work focuses on form, giving importance to common, non-descript animals which represent a pure, innocent and spiritual presence; while his is backgrounds are often filled with visual noise, mirroring our hectic, and image laden society. Griffin is inspired by ancient artwork on cave walls and by children's art, which influence his random markings and seemingly scribbled areas on his canvases. What makes Griffin's work so appealing is how he explores every possibility of painting; from the repetitious brush stoke areas to his chaotic gestures, to careful dissections of the canvases with brilliant saturated coloring.

Please feel free to join us Opening Night to view this new exhibition for Christopher, titled ‘Ground Rules’ on Thursday August 2 from 7-9 pm.

We're looking forward to seeing Cory Fuhr's next life size steel male sculpture; it's been in the works for some time now and is looking like a late August date for completion.

“Painting is stronger than me; it makes me do its bidding.”
