FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER

There have been lots of new things in the gallery this month; beginning with another successful 1 st Thursday Opening. There was great response to new works by the talented, young painters in our ‘Code of COLOR’ exhibition. We enjoyed meeting Kitchener’s James Nye, Ben Van Netten from Victoria as well as local artist Roja Aslani.

This months show, highlights how these artists use color to play an integral role in their paintings. Mario Cote uses both color and pattern to transpose a visual code on his canvases, while Ben Van Netten synthesizes colors to capture an image influenced heavily by technology and other digital tools, in his paintings.

Cory Fuhr’s large sculpture titled ‘Aspire’ has found a home in the Yorkdale Arts Center in Toronto. It has become their new logo, and stands prominently on display. Cory’s ‘Standing Man’ sculpture has a cameo role in the upcoming movie ‘Mimzy’; you can see him on the movie trailer at Mimzy.com or up close at Sopa.

Alan Boileau has installed a large scale commission in the lobby of a Calgary Oil company, 9 pieces for a corporate office in Edmonton and is working on a new project for the Great Canadian Casino Corp. Sara McIntosh-Robichaud has solo exhibitions in Montreal and Toronto at the Engine Gallery coming soon. Sopa is now accepting submissions for this year’s U8 Event; please see the web site for more details.

James Nye series, 'Manifest Expression'

James Nye cleverly uses color in layers of graffiti over urban landscapes. The paintings feature two visual languages that coincide simultaneously. One language is the graffiti that some one was compelled to create; the other language is the landscape or the location where the graffiti was found. Local artist, Roja Aslani breaks free from conventional ideas of what is beautiful, with rips, tears and weaves, as she stretches canvas to recreate newness, with a beauty of its own.

‘Standing Man’ makes his movie debut this March in ‘Mimzy’

really explain this? no. Just as one can never learn how to paint.
