DEBORAH BELL - statement

Close Window

Deborah Bell‘I am interested in the idea of everything in nature being made of essentially the same stuff- energy and light- and our interconnectedness with all other life.

One of my ongoing explorations is what I call “invented science”, a combination of what I have learned about molecular biology and systems in nature and my play with making the invisible visible.

The imagery in the recent work involves growth structures in microbiology, inter-lacings of unicellular life forms in aquatic realms, elemental building blocks and interdependent networking found in the physical world, A conviction in the inherent value of all life forms has lead me to investigating the minute.

My work can have a strong sense of place which echoes daily changes in the world around– light, palette, temperature, atmosphere…the weave of nature in a city.

Another aspect of this sense of place is what I have referred to as an inner world or what Matta named ‘inscapes’. This terrain explores a more mythical or felt landscape that has a way of resonating in the outer world.’
